1. The Hall County Website has several ideas and examples of anchor charts for writing. The one I like most from this website is the one titled "What do good writers do?" This anchor chart could be started at the beginning of the year and then added to each day and with each writing lesson.

2. Timeline anchor chart- At the beginning of the unit present the students with a blank time line. As they read and develop an understanding of the Underground Railroad, have them add event to the time line. It would be best to have the students write the events on paper and then paperclip them to the timeline in order to allow room to move them around. This will teach the students sequencing in the big picture as well as help them see all of the "causes" that lead to the final "effect."

3. The Art of Teaching Blog offers this great idea for helping students decide how to mark the spots in a book that they are having trouble with. It also helps them mark the spots where they learned something new or had a "wow" moment. Plus, it lets the students use sticky notes which is always entertaining to them.
